Taipei is world famous for xiaolongbao, Shanghainese steamed dumplings, due to the popularity and global expansion of Din Tai Fung. Many visitors who come to our beautiful city, especially Japanese, believe Din Tai Fung is one of the must-visit restaurants, but I tend to disagree. It's certainly one of the finest xiaolongbao restaurants Taipei has to offer, but sometimes you don't want to stand in line on a cold windy day and perhaps you want to save a buck or two as well. If so, then I recommend you to visit Hangzhou Xiaolong Tang Bao restaurant, it's my favorite xiaolongbao restaurant in the city. It's easy to find, because it's just at the back side of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. Let me show you what to expect, if you decide to visit:
This often disregarded restaurant offers some of the best Chinese food in Taipei for a very good price: around 5 USD per person. Can you imagine? The service was very professional and quick, the interior was pretty clean and cozy. There were a lot of families and friends gathering for dinner, most of them must have been Taiwanese. I have not spotted any Western tourist, I suppose it's still a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. I highly recommend this place and I'll definitely return soon.
