Shilin 士林區, Taipei

7/15/2012 Taiwan Explorer
1. Introduction

• Known for: night market, hiking
• Population: 289,000 (2012, source)
• Wade-Giles: Shih-lin
• Pinyin: Shìlín
• Romaji: Shirin
• Map: My map of Shilin

Shilin 士林區 is one of Taipei's northern districts, bordering on Beitou and several other districts. Shilin is famous for the popular night market and for being one of Taipei's early centers for scholars. After WWII, a lot of high-ranking politicians moved to Tienmu, which is now considered a fancy neighborhood, where rich reside and young ones love to shop. Most of the district is green and mountainous and includes the famous Yangminshan Mountain. Shilin is probably one of Taipei's most scenic areas. Here are the must see buildings and parts of Shilin (my personal recommendations): Shilin Night Market and Former Presidencial Residence and Yangminshan Mountain.
