Hsinchu City

Hsinchu City (新竹市, lit. "New Bamboo City") is a big city in Northwestern Taiwan, known for its prestigious schools, top universities and a science and technology industrial park, which makes it one of the biggest academic and industrial centers in Taiwan. The 400.000 inhabitants of the sometimes called "Windy city" enjoy one of the highest living standards in the country. The city used to be very important in the 19th century during the Qing dynasty rule, where it was surrounded by a wall and a moat and only accessible through four big and four small gates, of which only one gate remains intact today. That gate is also one of the most prominent spots in the city.
