Xinyi 信義區, Taipei

1. Introduction

• Known for: shopping, Taipei 101
• Population: 193,000 (2012, source)
• Wade-Giles: Hsin-i
• Pinyin: Xìnyì
• Romaji: Shingi
• Map: My map of Xinyi

Taipei is a huge city. You can find some old parts such as around the Longshan Temple, but most parts were built after 1945, when Taipei grew the fastest and became the nearly 7 million people ihabiting metropolis it is today. However, since the 1990s a completely new part became the central business and shopping district of the city. It's called Xinyi (信義, pronounced as Shìnyì and meaning honesty in Chinese). I have no idea why this name was chosen, but for me Xinyi is honestly the best place to shop in Taipei and most likely in Taiwan. Not only is Xinyi home to Taipei 101, which is one of the most impressive skyscrapers in the world, you also have numerous shopping malls connected with overpasses, which are separated by big avenues. In between some of the huge department stores you have large pedestrian areas. All that makes Xinyi the number one shopping destination in Taipei.
